Celebrating Becky!
All my life I have loved Becky. Who is Becky? Well she is the first born cousin on my mother's side of the family. See there were 16 first cousins and 13 of us were girls.
When I thought about writing this blog the scripture in Ecclesiastes came to mind, 3:1 "There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven:" The passage goes on through verse 8 but when I think of Becky I focus more on the second part of verse 4 "and a time to laugh".
You see, when you are around her, she is always jolly, full of Joy, which is fitting because that is her middle name. But also because that Joy comes from an inner joy that can only come from the Lord.
She has been an inspiration not only to me but to all the cousins because she was first. And we are thankful because my mother and Aunt tried every "old wives tale" in the world on her and her sister Jackie. We are just all thankful they lived through it all. They got perms, colored hair, scared (just because my Mama thought it would be funny), fed caster oil (for their annual cleaning out) and so many things that I just can't remember. We laugh now but I'm sure as young children and girls it wasn't so funny. Side note, I am truly sorry Beck and Jackie.
Everything Becky did, I wanted to do. She played the piano, I started playing the piano at 5. When I was old enough for beginning band, I really didn't want to play the trumpet at the time, but guess what Becky played. Since she played the trumpet and still had hers, you guessed it, I played the trumpet. And the list goes on and on. Becky went to the same church we did so she was always in my life. She played the piano and I played the organ. I saw her all the time. I don't ever remember her not being in my life. When my Mama died she was right there beside me as we were singing her home.
Her love for the Lord is the best part. It's contagious. You want that too. And so did I. At a very young age. Our family has been through and walked through some tragedy that would cripple families but we are what I have called before Bourne Strong! And it's because of that power of the Holy Spirit that lives in our lives. A miraculous strength that only comes from the Lord. Taught to us by our parents and grandparents.
So when I look at verse 4 it says "A time to Weep and a time to laugh! Oh sister, we have done it all. And sometime at the same time. I love you for all you have taught me in life! Happy Birthday!
